DETROIT – Two of Dearborn City Councilman Robert Abraham's son's friends were the target of aggressive behavior following a Red Wings hockey game Sunday outside of Joe Louis Arena, which prompted him to intervene in order to diffuse the situation and ended with an assault against him.

The councilman told the man that he was going to get into his car and suggested that he do the same. But instead of relenting, the man responded with violence.

“I was telling him that they're not bothering anybody, they're just kids, and before I knew it I was on my back,”Abraham said.

The man had repeatedly hit Abraham according to his wife Mary, who then drove him to Henry Ford Hospital where he received four stitches for cuts near his left eye. Abraham said on Monday afternoon that cannot see out of the eye and also that he didn't remember many other details of the attack. He is expected to recover fully, however.

“I'm totally shocked, I've seen a lot of altercations down there but in this case, I'm not a kid, and (his son's friends) were behaving themselves and minding their own business, they weren't taunting people or anything.

“If I had heard this story on the news I would say it was probably Blackhawks fans taunting the guy or provoking (the assailant) but that couldn't be further from the truth.”

The man drove away in a blue SUV hurriedly; detectives at Detroit Police do not have much in terms of leads or information but they are checking to see if they can find security tapes to assist in their investigation.
