New Troy ordinance prevents hookah lounges from operating past midnight

TROY — Hookah lounge owners in Troy will no longer be able to keep their doors open for business past midnight. On Monday, the Troy City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits hookah lounge owners from operating after 12 a.m.   Some hookah lounge owners say they'll have no choice, but to close down because of the ordinance.   
IRS offers workshop for small and mid-sized charitable organizations

DETROIT — The Internal Revenue Service and the Center for Nonprofit Management at Lawrence Technological University will co-host a low-cost, one-day, workshop on May 21 and 22, 2013 to help educate tax-exempt nonprofit organizations on meeting their tax obligations and ensuring they keep their tax-exempt status.
Winner of essay competition to get free laptop

DEARBORN — The winner of an essay contest, which is open to all high school students, is set to receive a free lap top. The essay competition is part of an event, themed Islamic Awakening and Muslim Unity: Imam’s Vision for the Ummah, which is being held in commemoration of the passing of Imam Khomeini, and will take place at the Islamic Council of America on Saturday, June 1 at 6 p.m. Speakers will include Imam Mohamad Al-Asi and Dr. Sheikh Mansour Leghaei.  In addition, the program will also include poetry, a youth speech, prayer and dinner. 
Michigan Muslim Capitol Day, May 28

LANSING — Muslim Americans from across the State are expected to gather at the capitol in honor of Michigan Muslim Capitol Day on May 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This year’s event will take place on the State’s capitol lawn. Officials from Governor Rick Snyder’s office and leaders from both the Democratic and Republican parties will participate in the event as well. 
Minimum wage employees take stand against low income, organize campaign

DETROIT —  Employees earning minimum wage across southeast Michigan have come together to protest low wages through, what is being called the D15 Campaign. According to the campaign’s website, D15 represents workers from more than 50 employers – food and retail – who are making tremendous profits, but do not pay employees enough to support their families and to cover basic needs, such as food, healthcare, rent and transportation.  The campaign hopes to get the message across to these employers that minimum wage is not fair pay.
New Detroit Meijer seeks to hire 400 employees

DETROIT — The new Detroit Meijer store, which is expected to open its doors for business this summer, is seeking to hire 400 new employees to work in different departments. The store will be located near 8 mile and Woodward.
