Report: Abuse, neglect of children costs U.S. $124 billion
Friday, 02.10.2012, 08:07pm
A new report estimates that $124 billion is the cost of child maltreatment, including physical abuse, psychological abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse. That's according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as published in the Child Abuse and Neglect, The International Journal.

Lifetime costs for a victim of maltreatment on average was over $200,000, which is comparable to other costly health conditions that are serious from a physical standpoint.

Poor health, social and emotional difficulties, and decreased economic productivity, are among the possible effects on victims of child abuse as well.

The report also found these negative effects over a survivor's lifetime generate many costs that impact the nation's criminal justice, health care, education, and welfare systems.

Those who know or suspect a child is being abused may contact the National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD.
