TOLEDO - Police are searching for a gunman who murdered a store-owner on Christmas eve.
According to police, the store owner, Kamal Awwad, 42, was shot and killed while working on Christmas Eve at his convenience store Al’s Market.
Police responded to an activated robbery alarm and reports of shots fired.
When officers arrived they found Awwad shot in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
"Everybody here is absolutely devastated and in shock," said Christine Tierney, a long-time customer at Al's Market.
He was described as a generous man, especially to his customers.
"Kamal would have given the shirt off of his back," said Tierney. "He helped so many people in this neighborhood, everybody respected him."
Tierney said that Awwad would often times help residents in the neighborhood who did not have enough money to buy groceries.
"He would just write it down on a piece of paper and say when you have the money, come back and pay me."
Awwad was one of 26 people named in a March, 2015, federal grand jury indictment that alleges racketeering, conspiracy, and money-laundering.
The case is pending in the U.S. District Court. Awwad had pleaded not guilty.
According to court records, a hearing is scheduled for February.
Awwad is reportedly survived by his children and wife.
