NEW YORK- On Monday, New York police confirmed that a man has been charged with a hate crime after holding a gun to the head of a Muslim cab driver.
Andrew M. Plachecki, 26, was apparently drunk as he waved to the cab early Sunday morning before threatening the driver with a gun and calling him a “motherf---ing piece of Muslim sh-t,” New York local newspaper Daily Freeman reported.
Police said he hailed the cab in New Paltz and asked to be driven to Congers, which is a more than 50 mile drive.
Police arrested Plachecki after the driver called into his dispatcher and was able to attract the attention of a state police car.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) saluted the arrest in a statement on Monday.
“We’re grateful to our law enforcement partners for their quick response to this disturbing attack,” CAIR-NY Director of Strategic Litigation Albert Cahn said. “This is no place for this sort of violence and hatred in New York State.”
