There are so many things to love about Islam.
Structuring one's life according to the phases of the moon and the cycles of
the sun keeps one close to nature and natural rythmns.
Beginning and ending the day with prayer, as well as taking breaks for prayer
during the day, keep one's thoughts focused on what's truly important in life.
Dividing all the world into what's clean and what's not clean and avoiding
contact with the dirty ensures health.
Organizing one's year around the annual observance of Ramadan and one's
life around the observance of hajj gives clarity and order to our existence.
And charity to the poor and needy help care for all the world's residents.
The observance of Ramadan is again upon us. It's a chance to discipline one-
self, to pray longer and harder than we do everyday, to show mercy to others
less fortunate, and to celebrate the existence of family and friends. It's also a
chance to reflect on our lives, on where we are and where we want to go.
Ramadan also gives us the opportunity this year to try and pull back from all
the Islamophobia in Western society, to gather in and support one another, to
affirm our awareness that the theology of Islam is sound and good and we are
proud of it.
We wish you the happiest, most reflec ve of Ramadans. May you find peace
and joy and serenity as you draw nearer to Allah.
Ramadan Mubarak!
